Regatta Entry

Goring & Streatley Regatta

• Did you watch the boat race and think – ‘I could do that!’

• Did you think, “I would like to have a go at rowing” but have
  never got around to it??

• Do you want an excuse for some exercise and a chance to
  enjoy the river Thames?

Well Goring Gap Boat Club would like to offer you the opportunity to have a go.

The 16th modern Goring & Streatley Regatta will take place on Saturday 21st July just upstream from Cleeve Lock on the Thames near Goring. The aim is to get as many crews onto the water who want to compete and there are four different classes so that complete beginners through to reasonably competent rowers can all compete on a fair basis over a short course, of 300 metres or 500 metres.

We are now inviting entries for the 2007 Regatta in the following categories:

• Men’s coxed four (4 men!)
• Ladies coxed four (4 women!)
• Mixed coxed four (2 men and 2 women!)
• Men’s single scull
• Ladies single scull
• Dongola (a team of up to 6 people including at least two
   women)
• Children’s races in dinghies and canoes (Age categories
   14-16, 11-13, 8-10).

We offer races for male, female and mixed crews. We race in coxed fours (one oar per rower). Children under 16 can race in the dinghies, dongolas and canoes; under 18s can race as part of adult crews in coxed fours and enter single sculls, subject to the committee being satisfied as to their safety.

This is a fun event for recreational rowers and is conducted under the rules on the next page. Beginners need have no fear of competing. The cost of all training is included in the entry fee. It is not an ARA event.

Training will be provided along with a competent cox so all you need to do is to recruit three friends to make up a crew. We offer up to five training sessions in the lead up to the Regatta and in the coxed four event you will be provided with an experienced Cox who will help you to make the most of your training and hopefully steer you victory on the day!! Training sessions can be booked on-line.
Category Definition

To ensure fairness in racing we seek to offer a number of evenly matched classes, with the classification of crews based on the crew’s experience at rowing, and in the regatta. Proper classification of crews is important to try and make the event as enjoyable as possible.

a. Events may be held in the following categories, depending upon the number of entries submitted.
The category names are:- Beginner, Bearable, Better, and Beautiful

b. The experience of each individual crew member (except coxswains who are provided by the club on the day) will be used by the organisers to determine the appropriate category for crews entering the regatta.

c. Three factors are taken into account::
i) Have you rowed in our regatta before?
ii) Have you rowed regularly with the GGBC or any other organisation in the last 20 years?
iii) How many finals have you raced in (winning or losing) at this regatta?

d. The final category in which crews race will be based on the information supplied in this entry form, prior knowledge and feedback from the training sessions. Crews are therefore informed that the initial determination of category may be modified based on point b above.

e. Please note the race distance and the number of training sessions provided.
