Goring & Streatley Regatta
The 17th modern Goring & Streatley Regatta will take place on
Saturday 19th July just upstream from Cleeve Lock on the Thames near Goring.
This is a fun event for recreational rowers and is conducted according with
the rules below. This
is not an ARA event. Entry includes the cost of all pre-regatta training and free entry to event. Boats and experienced coxes are supplied - just recruit three friends to make up a crew. Please note that any person who has held ARA points (eg no longer a novice) is not eligible to enter. The 2008 Regatta offers the following events:
• Men’s coxed four (4 men) • Women's coxed four (4 women) • Mixed coxed four (2 men and 2 women) • Men’s single scull • Women's single scull • Dongola (a punt paddled whilst kneeling) - a team of up to 6 people including at least two women. • Children’s races Canoes (age categories 8-10, 11-13, 14-16). Entries taken on the day of the regatta. Double gig racing - two children sculling (2 oars) + an adult cox. • Children's Dongola (5 children - primary school age + 1 adult - entries taken on the day of the regatta. |
Category Definition
To ensure fairness in racing we seek to offer a number of evenly
matched classes, with the classification of crews based on the
crew’s experience at rowing, and in the regatta. We assess and record each crews performance during the training sessions and do our very best to fairly classify each crew.
Events may be held in the following categories, depending upon
the number of entries submitted. Beginner, Intermediate, & Experienced The organisers decision on each crew's classification is final and without appeal. Regatta Training We provide sufficient training slots for each crew to practice at 5 regatta training sessions. To get the most out of the event you are advised to use your full training allocation.

Practise sessions must be booked in advance. Details of how to use the web based booking system will follow
with your entry confirmation notice. Please note - any crew failing to attend at least one training session will not be permitted to compete at the regatta.
Training begins on 16/6/2008 and ends on 11/7/2008 at the Oratory
School Boathouse, Whitchurch on Thames. |
Conditions of Entry
1) A separate entry form is required for each event, to be submitted
no later than 4/7/2008. Entry numbers are limited, so please get
your entry in early.
2) No entry will be accepted without the correct entry fee.
3) Each person may enter only ONE single gender and ONE mixed coxed
four event.
4) An organisation may enter a maximum of 6 crews in any one event
i.e. a total of 6 coxed fours.
5) Entries will be taken in the order in which they are received.
When numbers are restricted a waiting list will be compiled. Entry
fees for unsuccessful entries will be refunded.
6) Should there be insufficient entries in a given class of racing,
the organisers may offer the crew the opportunity to race in another
class.
7) Goring Gap Boat Club or any person acting for them shall not
be responsible for any loss, damage, personal injury or death
however caused arising from practising or participating in or
visiting the Regatta.
8) All rowing and sculling competitors must be able to swim the
width of the river i.e. at least 50m.
9) Life jackets for the children's events will be provided and MUST be worn.
10) The organisers reserve the right to withdraw a crew from the
competition if they are considered to be a danger to themselves, the
equipment or other river users. |
11) Races may be rerun if equipment fails within the first 100m of a
race except where seats are run off their slides, in which case the
race will not be rerun.
12) Crews MUST obey directions given to them by Race Control
officials & Umpires
13) The decisions of the Umpire are final.
14) All crew names must be inoffensive and the organisers reserve
the right to request a name change.
15) Competitors in all events will use the boats, oars and
coxes provided by GGBC only.
16) Information given on the entry form for commentating purposes is
for public broadcast.
17 All entrants will be temporary members of Goring Gap Boat Club
during training and the Regatta.
18) All competitors except those entered will be required to pay for admission to the
regatta site.19) No person with ARA points is eligible to enter 20) All crews must attend at least one training session. 21) 16/17 year olds may race as part of adult
