The GGBC adult Row2Win
course has been designed specifically for competent
rowers (Learn2Row graduates etc) who want to take
their rowing to the next level. An experienced coaching team
will work together with the crews to improve fitness and
technique over an intensive 12 session programme. Each
session will have a specific objectives backed up with a
variety of learning methods (handbook, video analysis, ergos,
group discussion, rowing tank etc). The focus will be on
continuous improvement and progression as a team. As the
course progresses each participant will be expected to take
greater responsibility for their own development. The
course concludes with a head or regatta entry (decided by
the group) in which the crews can test themselves against
some real opposition. Racing is an exciting experience and
something from which we can all learn more about ourselves.
Winning at all costs is not the objective of the
course...
The emphasis of the course is teamwork,
technical competence and fully understanding the
underlying principles of rowing. Better rowing leads
a more enjoyable time on the river....
- Course feedback and coaching - Throughout the
course a team of experienced coaches (including guest
coaches from other clubs) will be on hand to provide
expert advice and guidance from the vantage point of the
club's safety / coaching launches. In addition a Row2Win webpage
will be online with still and video footage of
your outings....one of the best ways to gain feedback
and invaluable coaching advice.
- Who should attend? - Row2Win is an adult only course (18+).
Participants should be confident when rowing and
understand the basics. Anyone who has completed the
Learn2Row course will have the required skills. We aim
to be inclusive, age, fitness level etc should not be
seen as barriers to joining the course - a willingness
to be an active and enthusiastic member of a crew is far
more important.
You must be able to swim at least 50m in light
clothing.
- How many participants - we have no specific
limit. Our aim is to have separate men's and women's
crews in either fours or eights.
- What to wear - a layered approach is always
best given the vagaries of the British weather. Tight
fitting tops and leggings are best to prevent clothing
becoming entangled. A light waterproof is also handy and
a hat. See the GGBC kit page
and the
BR guidelines.
- Boats & Crews- single sex crews in
either fine fours or eights.
- Course Fee
is just
£75 for GGBC members, £100 for non-members
(membership for course duration included) This covers
all the course sessions (no extras for the rowing tank
etc). It does not include ARA membership or
regatta entry costs.
- Location - The course will be run from the
Oratory boathouse,
Whitchurch on Thames.

The coaching team expect to include the following subjects
and activities during the course:
- British Rowing Technique (BRT) - the
fundamentals of rowing to ensure we are all at least
trying to do the same thing! The Catch, drive, finish,
recovery will all be covered in detail.
- Coaching - advice to help you improve. We aim
to have an experienced coach in a launch along side
every crew.
- Rowing exercises - understand why we do them
and how to emphasising particular parts of the stroke.
- Rowing Tank session - ever popular evening
working on technique in a controlled environment.
- Coxing - Instruction on the responsibilities
and skills required to steer and command a crew boat.
All course members will be expected to spend time at the
helm - an excellent way to assess the subtle technical
problems within the boat.
- Video analysis - regular review of text book
rowing technique from DVDs along with footage of the
crews to sort out any niggling problems.
- Ergo training and technique - implementing
BRT, improving fitness and advice on a structured
training program (not compulsory!).
- Boat adjustment - the importance of setting
up the boat correctly. How to rig a boat correctly and
the effect of small adjustments on the athlete.
- Safety & First Aid - always a priority we emphasis the
dangers that lurk and how to best avoid them.
- Nutrition and Diet - body fuel is all
important! We help you understand what to eat and drink
to perform at your best and recover afterwards.
- Racing strategy - the race plan, psychology,
and tactics.
Post Row2Win - the
course is an introduction to squad rowing and racing. We
hope it will improve the standard of rowing within the club
and give participants a fuller understanding of the sport.
If members wish to compete occasionally after the completion
of the course they will be given full support however we do
not intend to have ongoing competitive squad rowing as a club activity -
this would distract from the clubs' core values as a fully
inclusive recreational club.
Anyone who gets the competitive bug will be encouraged to
join RRC or WRC where they can fully explore their potential
at a club where racing is given a higher priority. |
