L2R/L2S - Rowing - Rowing Tech & Coxing - Club Sessions - The Reach - Boats - Racing - Touring - Punting - Corp Row

The GGBC Learn2Row/Scull courses allows beginners to try the sport of rowing. The club has always had an enviable reputation for encouraging new comers to 'give it a go' - these courses provides a more structured approach to getting to grips with the basics and having fun on the river.

The courses fast track beginners over a series of intensive sessions from the basic techniques through to rowing a super fast eight or single scull.

GGBC is proud to be one of the few  British Rowing accredited L2R clubs in the UK.

Learning to Row at GGBC

Most of the club's rowing is in racing 'fours' - these are relatively narrow and light boats with sliding seats that allow the rower to use both legs and arms to drive the boat through the water. If you have never rowed before don't worry - most people can pick up the basics of rowing after a couple of sessions. We are always happy to coach novices. Depending on conditions you may start out in a 'tub pair' - a stable boat that provides a good environment for learning - or you might go straight out in a four with more experienced rowers. When we train crews for our summer regatta teams learn together in a racing four, and race after 3 to 5 outings.

As well as the fours we also row in 'quads' and single sculls. These boats are similar to the fours, but each rower has two oars, instead of the single large oar used in a four.

Single sculls have a reputation for being difficult to row, but once you have mastered the technique they are great fun. The quads are much easier to row, and provide a good introduction to sculling.

We are happy to accept members of any age and level of fitness, although you should be in good health and be able to swim at least 50m.

Many of our members have taken up rowing for the first time with the club, others rowed in their youth and welcome the chance to get on the water again. We are happy to welcome young rowers, but rowing in fours is only really suitable for the over 15 year olds. From 11 to 15 children can try sculling, but need to be under the supervision of a parent or other nominated adult while in club boats.

Club Rowing Sessions

Regular club rowing sessions are held at the Oratory School Boathouse, Whitchurch on Thames, during our rowing season - which is mainly from spring to the autumn, when weather and water conditions are suitable. Club sessions will be supervised by a committee member. Rowing outside of club sessions requires prior authorisation from the Captain of Rowing or another qualified committee member.

 Oratory Wet Boathouse

Sunday morning sessions start at 9:00 am, and we meet on Thursday evenings at 18:00. Thursday evening sessions run from April to October. Sunday sessions continue, river conditions allowing, throughout the year.

Click here for directions to the Oratory boathouse. There is limited parking at the boathouse. Please do not park in the lane that leads to the boathouse. If unsure ask for advice on parking.

The Reach

GGBC enjoy the use of an excellent reach of the middle Thames. Between Whitchurch and Purley locks there is a quiet stretch of ~4km of wide even and fairly straight water.

The Oratory boat house is the only rowing user of this stretch. There is a thriving canoe centre at Pangbourne - The Dolphin Centre - both sports work very well together.

Pleasure boats tend to moor along Pangbourne meadow - just watch out for them if you venture up that way. It's also a popular fishing spot along the meadow and down stream from the boathouse - always be co-operative and watch out for their gear.

Other areas to be wary of are:

  • the toll bridge, and beyond this the weir and lock cut - never row above the bridge.

  • the weir and lock at Mapledurham - turn well before you reach this area.

  • the small island down stream of Mapledurham

  • various corners along the reach - just ensure you remain on the correct side!

  • riverside trees which have a tendency to jump out at unsuspecting scullers and entangle them!

Keep a good look out for wildlife along the reach - kingfishers are common, barn owls is often seen quartering over the meadow, red kites and buzzards ride the thermal overhead ....it's a lovely spot.

Boats

GGBC has an ever growing fleet of boats. Most are quite old but in excellent condition. Many are 'restricted' - very stable and ideal to learn in.

The current list extends from single sculls to 8s.....so there should be something for everyone.

We also have a fleet of gigs, 2x+ & 2+... ideal for families and beginners.

Wintech 1x in actionMaintenance is an ongoing task so if you have some hidden skills or a few spare hours please feel free to come down and help out. The older wooden boats are beautifully made and a privilege to work on....but they do need constant attention to keep them in tip top condition.

We're always looking for quality boats and equipment - good condition is more important than super fast (and expensive) boats. Let use know if you hear of anything good!

Racing

The Goring Gap Boat Club is a club that focuses on recreational rowing rather than racing. Our main racing activity is limited to the Goring and Streatley Regatta in July. Here we run races for novice and other rowers who don't normally compete in races over 300 metre and 500 metre courses. We usually hold fun regattas for scratch crews at the beginning and end of our rowing season. We are not however totally uncompetitive, and we do have a group within the club who take part in some local regattas.

To avoid trailering of boats we have tended to concentrate on local regattas. We have entered the Reading University Head, the Reading Head and Head races are run by the Wallingford Rowing Club.

We also travel further a field - to Angers, France for "Les Coupe des Dames", a 15km marathon, and also to Paris to compete in "Les Fondateurs" a mere 4km head race - both are great events......our international credentials a credit to the club.

Angers - Coupe des Dames 2005
we're still very much in contention after 10kms!

Although we don't enter club teams into the Wallingford Pub regatta held in September each year, boat club members often put together teams on behalf of local organisations such as the Goring Social Club, and are often successful in the 500 metre races. Members of GGBC have a slight advantage....WRC use our boats for the event!

Touring - click here for full details

Touring the Thames and beyond..... a great way to explore the river with a group of friends. GGBC has three excellent wide, stable, sliding seat gigs ideal for a camping trip over a weekend or longer.

These boats are great for beginners and family outings..... and have also gained popularity with more experienced members who want to hone their technique.

We have two pairs (single oar each) and a double (two oars each). Each has room to two passengers - a great way to see the river!

Each boat has a dedicated trolley to allow easy launching (2 adults required) and a custom rain cover - no more bailing!

There is a dedicated touring page with all the latest on upcoming adventures.

Punting - click here for full details

Thinking about those warm summer days to come? Wouldn't it be great to be drifting gently down the river on a hot sunny day with a picnic?

The Goring Gap Boat Club is committed to supporting the recreational use of the river Thames for our community. We own 2 punts and a dinghy which we base in the villages, on our local stretch of river. The punts and dinghy are available to any of our members, and are ideal for a relaxed afternoon exploring the river and the local backwaters.

We originally operated two plywood punts - very light and stylish, but they weren't very robust and have recently been replaced by fibreglass punts, of a similar design to those available for hire in Oxford.

Our punts are probably the best bargain on the Thames - a years membership in the club can cost less than an afternoon's punt hire in Oxford! Our two new punts are available to all members of the club. They take four adults and a picnic very comfortably and can be paddled or poled.

Interested? - visit the membership page to find out how to enjoy these boats.

Want to know more about punting on the Thames - visit Punter's guide to the Thames - some excellent historic photos too....see also 'How to Punt' by John Eade.

Corporate Rowing - click here for full details

GGBC has run a number of highly successful corporate rowing events. Ranging from an afternoon to a full 2 days our courses are intensive, challenging and great fun. Fully qualified coaches lead the participants through the basics, run through the rowing stroke on the ergos, and then get everyone out on the water to try out their new found skills.

Rowing in fours or fine eights the highlight of the course the head to head race.....hotly contested by both the crews and their coaches!
