Update

The 2009 Sponsored Row raised a staggering
£4396.31
in aid of The Lymphoma Association

Sponsored Row - Sunday 2nd August 2009

It's been a couple of years since our last big  charity fund raising event ....so we thought it was time we took to the river again in aid of a good cause.

We've chosen to row from Wallingford, through Goring and Pangbourne to the Oratory Boathouse at Mapledurham....a trip of 10+ miles. We're hoping to encourage as many people as possible to take part - hence a less ambitious distance (the logistics of getting through 10 locks in August would also be a major headache!)

The challenge starts at the Oxford Brookes / Oxford University boathouses in Wallingford. We aim to row non-stop, passing through 3 locks on the way, Cleeve, Goring and Pangbourne before reaching our destination. Obviously we'll be expecting some rousing support from the public along the way...

We've invited our friends from Maidenhead and Reading RCs to join us. Please note....it's NOT a race, although some may feel the urge to row at firm pressure for at least some of the journey!

Boats - we'll see how many want to take part first but we should aim for at least a couple of eights, some restricted fours and may be a couple of tubs. we'd like everyone to participate, raise some money, and have a great day on the river. Every GGBC member is capable of rowing the distance....so no excuses, we want you there!

Our aim is to arrive back at the Oratory boathouse by mid afternoon in time for a BBQ and party - a way to thank everyone who has taken part, and to celebrate the life of Jeff Cronyn.

We raised over £4000 at our last sponsored row in 2007..... we're aiming a little higher this time - £5k+. Every pound given can help to make a lasting difference so please give generously and invite your friends and work colleagues to help out too.

Making a contribution couldn't be easier....just logon to our justgiving site:

There will also sponsorship forms available for those who haven't yet mastered the internet!

In Memory of Jeff Cronyn

The event is dedicated in memory of GGBC club member Jeff Cronyn who sadly passed away in December 2008 following a long battle against a little known form of cancer called "Non Hodgkins Lymphoma".

Jeff who had been the landlord of The Red Lion pub in Upper Basildon for the past nine years had not only been the driving force behind the many Red Lion crews that competed at the Goring & Streatley Regatta, he was also an enthusiastic competitor himself.

He was a keen oarsman who first rowed at school in his native country, Canada.

He rowed regularly at GGBC and despite his illness still managed to row as part of a Red Lion crew at the Wallingford Town Regattas in 2006/07.

His overwhelming enthusiasm shone through at last years Goring & Streatley Regatta where he spent several hours on the riverbank supporting the Red Lion rowers and the other competing crews. Jeff enjoyed many evening outings on the river especially appreciating the peaceful waters and wonderful wildlife on view. In August, on what turned out to be his last outing, Jeff was delighted to see a number of Kingfishers darting across the sunlit waters.

Whilst dedicated to Jeff, we must not forgot other members of the club who have family and friends suffering from various forms of Cancer.

Charity

The row is to raise money for Lymphoma Association , a UK charity that provides accurate medical information and support to lymphatic cancer patients, their families and friends.

Lymphoma AssociationEvery hour of every day one person in the UK is diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. Lymphoma is the sixth most common cancer, but many people are unaware of it until diagnosed. The Lymphoma Association is the only UK charity specialising in information and support for patients and their families. They offer a freephone helpline 0808 808 5555 as well as free literature. Their services are available free of charge to people with lymphoma. They rely on donations from the public in order to keep our services running.
