Welcome to GGBC

The Goring Gap Boat Club is one of the largest recreational boating clubs in the Thames valley.

Membership is open to all, from youngsters gaining their first rowing experience to veterans with a life time on the river. Beginners are assured of a warm welcome, and a relaxed and safe introduction to the sport. No previous experience is required, and we provide tuition to all our new members.

The clubs' aims are simple - "...to make it possible for members to enjoy un-powered boating....". Over the years it's estimated that 1500 rowers have taken to the water under the guidance of GGBC, many of them competing in the ever popular Goring and Streatley Regatta.

The centrepiece of the club's activity is the annual Goring and Streatley Regatta, which combines fun racing (for all the family) with live entertainment, a fun fair, food, craft fairs and much more. It's a 'not to be missed' event with some 600 rowers competing and a crowd of over 5000 people. A great atmosphere for competing and a superb day out for all the family.

Make a note in your diary now - Saturday 19th July 2008

With the increased interest in rowing as both a leisure pursuit and a competitive sport GGBC has made strides towards providing some great facilities. Recent arrivals have been a superb coaching / safety launch, 4 brand new sculls, and a double gig. We've also purchased the less exotic items....cox box, blades etc that make everyone's rowing a better experience. See the Rowing page.

All are welcome to come along and try their hand at rowing .... it's great to be out on the river keeping fit, meeting new friends and enjoying the wonderful scenery. See the Membership page for full details.

If rowing sounds too much like hard work give the punts a go....

The club is currently based at the Oratory School boathouse  in Whitchurch on Thames, and also has facilities for punting at the Swan hotel in Streatley (ideal for a leisurely picnic with friends). We have a large range of boats available from single sculls to eights, the majority of our rowing being in stable fours and quad boats - ideal for getting to grips with the basics before moving on to the finer shells.

Many thanks to everyone who came along to the event, after the disappointment of last year we really appreciate your support.

The regatta is the result of a huge amount of hard work from the GGBC members and friends - Guys and girls, you did a brilliant job - many thanks to each and everyone of you.

Regatta Tickets - Save money, buy your tickets in advance. There's a great saving to be made by going online and buying your tickets. Alternatively you can call in at Inspirations or the Catherine Wheel.

Ferry & shuttle bus service - come regatta day what better way to get to the big event than take the ferry from Goring lock - every 30min. Alternatively you can catch the shuttle bus ... again running every 30mins.

Regatta Draw - who's racing who and when..... click here to download.

There is also a second chance to race for all those knocked out on the first round of the beginners and Intermediate categories ....look for the 'Consolation Plate'.

Learn2Scull - a great success! Despite the final day of the L2S course having to be reorganise due to the gales earlier this year our intrepid participants were keen to ventured out for their single debut..... it was still rather windy, but that didn't deter them.

Everyone had a great time.... exhausting yes, both mentally and physically, but everyone made lots of progress.

The 'winner' of the fun regatta - a combination of skill exercises and racing was Ian.... a close run thing which came down to the final sprint race.
Darren winner the Wet Tee shirt comp!
Next L2S ~August

Ian - top GGBC L2S sculler

Pete (Expert sculler)Scullers wanted......to enter the Goring and Streatley regatta.

Go on, have a go......we've got four new sculls to show off - so you'll look professional (well at least when you're stationary!).

Still places available in the dongola racing.....an ever popular fun event for all the family. Still pulling that restricted four crew together....time is running out!

ARA Award for GGBC Captain of Rowing - Goring Gap Boat Club has received further recognition from the Sport's governing body the ARA in the news that our Captain of Rowing, Richard Bowsher, has been named as Volunteer of the Year in the open class for clubs in the Thames Region.

This is great news and a highly deserved accolade for Richard - anybody who has been a regular participant at GGBC over the past few years will have seen the fantastic efforts which Richard has put in and the amount of sheer hard work he has given to the club. We already knew that the ARA were very impressed with our Learn 2 Row programme inspired and managed by Richard, and
it is our view that the judging panel will have had a very easy decision in declaring Richard the winner of this prestigious award.

Ironically, it's unlikely that Richard will be able to attend the ARA awards lunch at the National Championships in Nottingham on 19th July. Why? - because he will be giving up his time directing competition operations at the Goring & Streatley Regatta!

Well done and thanks Richard from everybody at GGBC!

Tim Gill
GGBC Chairman

Crew Members wanted! - a couple of the clubs' best young talented rowers (graduates from L2R) are in search of a two fit females to join them in a women's crew at the regatta...... If you fancy being part of a potential winning crew drop us a line and we'll put you in touch - email Regatta training gets underway - the first few crews have taken to the water....some for the very first time! With conditions being perfect they've really come on in leaps and bounds..... we are already tipping some for victory. If you've entered the regatta it's best to get that all important coaching underway before everything becomes rather hectic!

Regatta Entry - only a couple of weeks before the regatta entries close.....so don't wait too long or you'll be disappointed! A common problem is a crew of 3 looking for that extra person before taking the plunge (hee hee)....or the lone rower who'd really like to compete but hasn't found a crew. Well we might be able to help. Send us an email and we'll do our best to get crews together...

All men or women crews.....why not combine your talents and enter a couple of mixed crews? Again we can help... either email  or leave a message on the white board at the boathouse?

Regatta Poster - download today.....Ideal to remind all your family and friends of a great day by the river!

Print a couple for the office notice board, local pub, village hall, shops etc.... we don't want anyone to miss out!

Red Boards..again! - lots of rain again this week has ensured that the river is on red boards - all boats (powered or unpowered) not to venture out. See Environment agency for fully details. Safety Newletter - John, our ever resourceful safety adviser has produced an excellent safety newsletter.....download a copy today!

Regatta crews - be quick the entries are flooding in.....and the regatta training sessions are booking up just as quickly. Looks like being one of the most highly contested regattas ever.

We've also had lots of interest for our 'eights challenge' - local clubs have been invited to put forward beginners crews to compete against the GGBC elite eights. If your crew didn't quite make the National Championships (also on the 19th July) then why not come along to the next best thing? Interested - drop us a line
Lockkeepers cottages to be sold! - As all regular river users will appreciate the Thames is manned by a great bunch of dedicated lockkeepers. They are always happy to advise on river conditions, support our club and be on hand when needed. It is therefore rather worrying that there are steps a foot to sell off the cottages that are such a integral part of the lockkeepers life.

Log on to www.saveourservice.org for full details, and on how you can help try to save this valuable facility.

Sculling Sessions - With our fleet of gleaming single and double sculls it seems a shame not to use them more often, particularly during the summer evenings..... So how about an evening just for small boats?.....singles, doubles and pairs (including Snuffy) but nothing bigger. We can have the launch patrolling to pick up the 'wet ones'.....and to provide some valuable coaching. A great way to get more time on the water with the reassurance of help on hand if needed.

How about Tuesday evenings? - starting just after the regatta on 22nd July and continuing every week until 2nd September. If you fancy the idea let me know....and if we get enough interest it will happen... Email

John - illustrating the need to look ahead....
and know how to do an emergency stop!

The view from the sculling seat....
evenings are a great time to be on the river

Corporate Event exceeds expectations - 12 Polish business men from Warsaw made the journey to the Thames Valley for an intensive 2 day Learn2Row course.....and had a great time! A combined effort between GGBC and OSBC provided a fully structured L2R course with expert coaching. For 11 of the participants the content of their UK trip was a complete surprise....only revealed as they boarded the plane. Little did they know how physically and mentally demanding the two days would be!

Excellent teamwork....one of the key principles of success!

Rowing has to be the ultimate teambuilding sport - the guys were determined to do well but they also needed to work together towards the common goal. Considering they were complete beginners it was amazing how quickly they progressed from the first nervous strokes on day one to racing 500m at firm pressure on day 2 - a real measure of their perseverance, concentration and determination not to let their colleagues down. A credit to both the participants and also the many volunteers who helped out over the two days.

The final event of the course was a 500m head to head.....and what a race to proved to be....neck and neck until one crew member caught a crab!

Perfect balance and timing......after just a few hours!

Erging - one of the many challenges

The end result - a fantastic achievement
